You should use sixad/QtSixA http://qtsixa.sourceforge.net/ . Just install from the repo and pair with sixpair while the sixaxis is connected with usb, and then connect with Bluetooth by pressing the PS button.

Sorry to be that guy but compiling from source worked for me and the PPA has been pretty quiet for a while now (not weird at all considering the GitHub hasn't been updated in 4 years and the 'final' version was released around the same time), so don't hold your breath for a xenial package.

The excellent guide I linked gives you a few commands to download all prereqs and compile but I will summarize here:

You are able to connect the controller to the pc via usb cable. This is supplied with a PS3 device (it is the primary way to charge the controller). I don't know how to connect the controller via bluetooth to your computer (if you even have a bluetooth receiver), so this answer focusses on usb connection. It might be that the controller already works if you do this (You can test this with jstest-gtk as listed below). I use another similar PnP controller, and it works without difficulty.

if it does not work automatically, this link might answer your question. In summary:

• install xboxdrv from the Ubuntu Software Center or with sudo apt-get install xboxdrv
• start xboxdrv with sudo xboxdrv --detach-kernel-driver
• If you press the Playstation button, the computer will receive its input and simulate it as an Xbox 360 controller, which should work the same as the playstation controller.

You can test the functionality of your controller through Jstest-gtk (install: sudo apt-get install jstest-gtk)

PPA won't work on Ubuntu Xenial derivates but there is a solution. If you have Ubuntu 16.04 and would like to use qtsixa, you can use these commands to trick the PPA into thinking that you’re running 15.10:

Change the following lines to the values below:

and save.

Now install the PPA for qtsixa. Then copy the original lsb-release file back to were it was.

Now you can reboot.

Useful for using Intel Graphics Installer for Linux™ too, tested in Linux Mint 18 thanks to this post.

On Ubuntu 15.10/16.04 and Linux Mint 18, you can still use the QtSixA PPA, but specifying 'vivid' as the Ubuntu version (15.04), since that was the last officially supported version. To do so, execute the following:

Note: as far as I can tell, the GUI based application is no longer useful, at least to detect and connect controllers through Bluetooth. Because of that, you need to use the command line-based applications, i.e. sixad and sixpair

Edit: Apparently and according to my tests, sixad automatically starts at the boot, but doesn't work at all when that happens, having to stop it an re-start it to make it to work. To prevent sixad from being started at the boot, you have to execute:

and, when you're going to use it, execute:

of course, all the above is because QTSixA is no longer supported. The PS3 and PS4 controllers are supposed to work natively in Linux, but I still prefer to use it instead of the native support. I haven't been able to connect my PS3 controllers natively, and when I use QTSixA, I can do other things like specify the Bluetooth MAC address to be paired with.

I think I will mail the developer to know if it's possible for him to resume the support. I believe that only applying small modifications, the project could work properly out-of-the-box. And, even without doing anything, the PPA could still work.

Hi im bringing not an issue but a SOLUTION so as i know every almost user came here first to see a solution for their problems im writing that.
First of all thanks to @nefarius for this great software and his great hard work.

The file ScpControl.dll here is for the version 1.7.277.16103 so first check if your version is that and this modded file can fix a lot of fake PS3 controllers that one that are being selled as an original one but its not.
WARNING: THIS FIX MAYBE NOT WORK FOR EVERY FAKE CONTROLLER BUT WAS REPORTED THAT WORKS WELL WITH THE GENUINE ONE BY OTHER USER, MAKE YOUR TEST.
BEFORE YOU DID ANY MODIFICATION PLEASE MAKE A BACKUP OF THE FILES YOU HAVE TO CHANGE.

1- Download the file on the link is on .zip format extract the ScpControl.dll copy and paste on the ScpToolkit folder instalation and replace it, start the ScpToolkit Stand-alone Server and connect your controller with the USB press the PS button when the LED stop flashing wait a little then disconnect the USB cable and its DONE!! Bluetooth connected, cry a little bit and thank me for that :p.
You have to do that with SCP service stopped and none of the Scp applications running ALL STOPPED.

Note: If you replace the file ScpControl.dll and you cannot make it work follow these next steps.

Optional Steps
2- Go to your Device Manager and search for your bluetooth adapter right click on it open the Properties look at the Hardware tab and click Properties again and Details tab click on the dropdown list search for GUID class device copy the whole string and paste it on the ScpControl.ini file on the folder instalation at the [Bluetooth Dongles] in this format
i.e (DeviceGuid = {The Number of you GUID here}).

3- Repeat the 2 step until it came to properties of your bluetooth adapter and on the Details tab on the dropdown list search for Hardware IDs Copy the whole string of the two and paste it on the ScpControl.ini file at the HIDs of supported bluetooth dongles in this format
i.e (HardwareId = USBVID_0BDA&PID_8723&REV_0200
HardwareId = USBVID_0BDA&PID_8723) *Thats an example use it your device ID sure right!!

4- Repeat the 2 and 3 step for your PS3 controller in the device manager selecting it instead of your bluetooth adapter and paste the strings of the GUID at the [DualShock 3 Controllers] and the Hardware IDs to the HIDs of supported DS3 controllers in the same format as described before on the ScpControl.ini file.

So thats all, i expect you all can fix the problems with bluetooth of your controllers with this modded fix just to remember:
VERSION OF THE FILE IS 1.7.277.16103SO JUST WORK AT THE SAME SCP TOOLKIT VERSION!!!!!!

NOTE: If the modded dll above is not working for you maybe your almost original controller is a PANHAI, one of the most selled out there, so if is your case Download this for PANHAI controllers (Works on version 1.7.276 and 1.7.277)
